Aaron's Nursery
Sumner, GA

While palm trees are often considered to be exclusive to tropical areas, select varietals can be grown in colder climates with the proper care. Georgia-based Aaron’s Nursery, an Internet retailer of all types of plants, divides its palm tree selection into three categories: Northern, Southern, and Lower South. By selecting the variety that is most appropriate for their climate, Aaron’s Nursery customers can make the best choice of tree to thrive in their yard for years to come. Aaron’s Nursery’s selection of Northern palm trees includes the Dwarf Palmetto fan palm tree, which is native to the coastline of the Eastern U.S. Able to tolerate temperatures as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit, the Dwarf Palmetto has an underground trunk that grows slowly, making it cold tolerant. Unfortunately, this slow growth also means that the Dwarf Palmetto is difficult to clone; pruning the plant’s extensive roots often causes it to undergo transplant shock when it is moved. By cultivating the Dwarf Palmetto in a nursery atmosphere, Aaron’s Nursery is able to create hardy plants that are less likely to experience transplant shock. Another popular palm sold by Aaron’s Nursery, the Needle Palm, is also resilient at low temperatures and can grow as far north as New York State. Also slow-growing, the Needle Palm is popular with birds, who often nest in its branches and are protected by the predator-discouraging needles. Customers in the Southern region have access to six types of palm tree grown by Aaron’s Nursery, including the famed Canary Island Date Palm, which can grow to be 50 feet tall. Ideal for city landscapes, the Canary Island Date Palm is resistant to car fumes, poor soil, and drought. The Jerusalem Date Palm is another popular Southern tree, with edible fruit that is enjoyed by many who grow it. The final category of palm trees sold by Aaron’s Nursery is the Lower South plants, which are designed to thrive in truly tropical climates. Aaron’s Nursery’s offerings include the Medjool Date Palm, renowned for its delicious fruit; and the Sago Palm, whose small size makes it popular for landscaping or containerizing.
